If resources were not limited, what research projects would you pursue?
Impact of viral infection on axonal transport.
Finding out if/how far SENS (http://www.mfoundation.org/sens) works.
What is your leading hypothesis?
I subscribe to the viral infection hypothesis. My guess is that sporadic AD is caused by collateral damage from viral infection disrupting axonal transport in turn causing neurodegeneration.
What piece of missing evidence would help prove it?
Interaction of viruses with axonal transport initiating transport dysfunction.
What is your fallback position?
Incidence of late-onset AD is correlated with age which points to accumulation of random damage to neurons. If so, then it is cellular ageing that we must focus on and, perhaps, SENS is the way forward.
